November Meeting Details

Our November meeting is coming up on November 19th! It begins at 7:00pm over at the University of Advancing Technology, inside the little theatre. (Due to a scheduling conflict, we’re meeting on a Tuesday instead of our usual Wednesday.)


Deconstructing Free to Play

Presented by Ara Shirinian

Ara ShirinianAra Shirinian is a game designer. His most recent role worth writing home about was Design Lead on Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion (3DS).

He also co-hosts Chatterbox Video Game Radio. He is most interested by mechanics and player psychology. You can find out more about him at

Deconstructing Free to Play will focus on a deep analysis of the dynamics of some of the most popular F2P games, especially with regard to learning, engagement, and psychological effects. He will present several hypotheses and predictions for the long term sustainability as well as unintended side effects of these dynamics.

Heads Up! This talk is going to cut deep, and runs about 90 minutes, so plan on staying a little bit later for this one!


Kickstart SCALE!
Local developer Steve Swink and his team CubeHeart is looking for funding on Kickstarter. As of right now they have over 100% of their goal, but still need your help! Check out the details and back SCALE over at Kickstarter.

Local developer Kyle Pulver has released his new 2d game making framework, Otter. It’s currently a beta release, but he plans to continue working on it and keeping the full source available to the public.  He also released the very first game using Otter, All the King’s Men.

Life-Skills Transition Game
A Research Specialist at ASU is looking for someone to help develop a game based on a life-skills transition curriculum for incarcerated youth (  This is a pilot with limited funding at the moment, but has the potential to expand substantially.
