The April Report: Acronyms ahoy! VGL, TEDx ASU and much more!

Hellooooo Phoenix-area game developers!

I have some great news and bad news for you. The bad news: there’s no monthly meeting this Wednesday (April 6th). The GREAT news is: we’re having a meeting NEXT Wednesday (April 13th) in a brand new space!

The new venue is Rosie McCaffrey’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, located at 7th and Camelback in Phoenix. It’s a little early to say, but this one might really be a keeper… I can already tell you their selection of draught beers is pretty excellent 🙂 Come help us test it out! Get your friends to come out! We want to make sure this place can handle our ever-growing numbers!

Also, I want to announce that we’ll be holding elections for our Board of Directors for the upcoming year! Every position is open (Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer), OR you can add a new position if you can make a good case for it! Throughout the month of April, we’ll be collecting nominations for positions. Candidates will give speeches at our May meeting, which is also when voting will be held.

It’s been a little while since we’ve had an update, so here’s a quick list of events coming up for this month!

VIDEO GAMES LIVE: Thursday, April 7th
7:30 PM at Mesa Arts Center

While not an IGDA-affiliated event, it’s true that VGL is coming to town this week. For those who don’t know Video Game Live, their website gives a pretty good synopsis, but basically it’s a big concert event headed by Tommy Tallarico that play choir and orchestra arrangements of video game music.

You can buy tickets from the Mesa Arts Center’s Box Office, they range in price from around $35-50.

Then next up this month, we’ve got our…

APRIL MEETING: Wednesday, April 13th
7 PM at Rosie McCaffrey’s Irish Pub and Restaurant

This will be a general social meeting, with the intention of catching up and trying out a new bar! We’ll have some announcements to make, including the one above about elections. Again, we’re looking to fill up this space with game developers! Get your friends to come out, it’s a great chance to hang out and network over a few beers!

Finally, to round out the end of the month, we’re happy to announce…

TEDx ASU WEST: Saturday, April 30th
8:30 AM – 8 PM at KIVA Lecture Hall, ASU West Campus

This is an independently-organized TED event. Do you know about TED talks? They’re pretty awesome, and this TEDx event is here to concentrate awesomeness on a local scale! If you haven’t yet, I URGE you guys to check this out. We’ll have our own local speakers: Cody Furr, Tyler Coleman and Kyle Pulver, speaking alongside distinguished names like renowned speaker Brenda Brathwaite. Go support your locals, learn things, make friends! It’s going to be awesome, so be sure you grab your tickets for it ASAP!

We’ll harass you more about this in the coming weeks 🙂 For now, for more information, you can check out the TEDx ASU website or the Facebook event.

Speaking of Facebook, did you know we post all of our events and updates to our Facebook and Twitter accounts? In addition to our blog and e-mail list, you can always catch the latest on your social networking site of choice!

See you on the 13th!
