Hey there, Phoenix Game Devs! Happy Monday!


We’ve officially concluded another successful Game Jam! Lots of learning, making friends, sharing ideas, and best of all, lots of cool new games to play! Thanks to everyone who came and participated, I hope you all got something out of it!


For those of you who couldn’t make it to the jam, don’t worry. You’ll still be able to play these games when you come to our

August IGDA meeting!

(Which is once again on the first Thursday of the month, August 5th, 7 P.M. at Boulder’s on Broadway!)


The Next Jam: There’s another jam coming up next month, August 13th-15th! While it’s not an official IGDA jam, it’s being organized by one Mr. Tyler Coleman, and we gotta say it sounds pretty rad. Catering, teams, judging, prizes!… and again, this is open to anyone and everyone making games in the Phoenix area. It’s being sponsored and hosted once again by UAT.


To this past weekend’s jammers: If you decide to keep working on your game jam games (highly encouraged!) and want to send me a new build before the August 5th meeting, just shoot me an e-mail (again, corey@igdaphx.org)!

This weekend’s (July 16th-18th) Game Jam

Hey Everyone!!  I hope you have all been getting your rest, as the long-awaited Game Jam is almost here!!

We will be following the Mini Ludum Dare (prounounced this way, not that), so at 8pm that theme will be announced.  If you don’t want to follow it, that is completely fine, and we will be arriving/setting up at 6pm for a 7pm kickoff.

Now where is it, you ask?  This weekend’s jam will be at the University of Advancing Technology.  We have three private classrooms, all adjacent to one another, with two of them being electronic (computer-equipped).  There are already Guest accounts created and ready, but if you want to use your own rig you are MORE than welcome to.  It will all be open 24 hours a day, so bring a pillow/blanket!!

As we will be here all weekend, bring your snacks and water with you…unless you want to use the water fountains on campus or go to Fry’s grocery/Subway – which is right across the street!!  Yes, this game jam will be very conveniently food-adjacent with a grocery store and Subway right across the street.

If you have any questions whatsoever, please feel free to e-mail one of us (caitlin@igdaphx.org, james@igdaphx.org, corey@igdaphx.org, jay@igdaphx.org).  We will have signs posted in the school, directing you where to go, but in case you don’t see them the classrooms are 106, 107, and 108; they are at the front of the school.

July in a Nutshell

Happy 5th of July! Hope you all got to enjoy some of the pretty particle effects in the sky this weekend (if you’re into that sorta thing).

July’s meeting was another good one! Thank you to everyone who came! And of course, thanks and congrats again to our speaker Shawn White, who is on his way to Unity HQ even as we’re writing this blog post! We have some big ol’ announcements for the coming month:

Game Jam! Friday – Sunday, July 16-18th

5 pm on Friday until 5 pm Sunday at University of Advancing Technology (UAT)

That’s right, it’s game jam time! So grab your computer and your Mountain Dew and get ready for another crazy 48-hour game development adventure! Don’t worry if you’ve never done one before, this event is open to anybody!

To those unfamiliar with the game jam format, a quick overview:

Friday, 7/16, 5 PM: We meet at UAT. This is the time for equipment set-up, brainstorming, getting to know people, etc. If you want to work with other people, you can pitch ideas and form teams. We’ll also be borrowing the theme from the MiniLD going on that weekend for those who would like to work with a theme or maybe even enter the compo. (A theme is a high-level word or phrase that you must then take and incorporate into your game. Themes can provide a good starting block for brainstorming.) You can start working on the game as soon as you’re ready, but generally…

Saturday, 7/17 til 5 pm on Sunday, 7/18: is JAMMING TIME! You can use any tool, language, or platform you want and can run your game on any platform. Generally, creating your own assets is encouraged over pulling from the public domain. Teams can be any size. (If you’re planning to enter the MiniLD compo, note that there will be additional restrictions to observe.)

Sunday, 7/18, 5PM: Wrap-up and presentation time! This is when people can demonstrate what they’ve been working on for the weekend.

Note: Meals aren’t provided, but we’ll have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand!

Even if you can’t make it for the whole weekend, it’s a great chance to work in a creative, energized environment. So feel free to drop by!

August Meeting: Thursday, August 5th

on a rather promising topic:

How To Get Into the Game Industry (And Stay in it!)

How to “break in,” or break back in if you’ve taken jobs outside the industry.

More details on this meeting near the end of the month! So stay tuned.
